chessmen

Knights and bishops

Chessmen are the pieces used in the game of chess.

The term covers all sixteen pieces per player: king, queen, bishops, knights, rooks, and pawns.

Though *men* suggests human figures, the word applies to all chess pieces regardless of shape: She arranged the chessmen on the board.
