chessman
Rook or pawn
A chessman is any of the pieces used in the game of chess—king, queen, rook, bishop, knight, or pawn.
The term treats all sixteen pieces on each side as a single category: The chessmen were carved from ivory.
Chessman is somewhat formal; in casual play, people usually just say pieces.
