counterplay

Active defensive resistance

Counterplay is responsive action that creates threats of one's own rather than merely defending.

The term comes from chess, where counterplay means generating attacking chances while under pressure: Black found counterplay on the queenside.

The concept extends to any strategic situation where the weaker side complicates matters rather than passively resisting: The defense attorney's counterplay kept prosecutors off balance.
