check-raise

Deceptive betting sequence

A check-raise is a poker move where a player first checks (declines to bet), then raises after an opponent bets.

The tactic disguises a strong hand to extract more chips: He trapped me with a check-raise on the river.

Used as a verb: She check-raised me off the pot.
