overbet

Wager beyond prudence

To overbet is to wager more than the situation warrants—either more than you can afford to lose or more than the odds justify.

In poker, an overbet is a bet larger than the current pot, used strategically to pressure opponents or extract maximum value: He shoved with an overbet on the river.

The term extends beyond gambling to any excessive commitment of resources: We overbetted on that acquisition.
