zeolite

Porous catalyst mineral

Zeolite is a class of porous minerals, both natural and synthetic, with a crystalline structure that can trap and release molecules.

This makes zeolites useful as molecular sieves, water softeners, and catalysts in industrial processes.

They're found in cat litter, laundry detergent, and petroleum refining: Zeolites in the filter removed the ammonia from the aquarium water.
