cartouches
Hieroglyphic name enclosures
Cartouches are oval frames enclosing Egyptian hieroglyphs, typically surrounding a pharaoh's name: The cartouche of Tutankhamun appears throughout his tomb.
In architecture and decorative arts, a cartouche is an ornamental tablet or frame, often scroll-shaped, bearing an inscription or emblem.
The term also refers to paper cartridges for firearms, now archaic.
