calking

Waterproof joint compound

Calking is an alternative spelling of caulking, the process of sealing joints or seams to prevent leakage of water or air.

The term appears most often in nautical contexts, where sailors traditionally calked the seams between a ship's planks with oakum and pitch.

The crew spent the afternoon calking the hull before setting sail.

In modern use, caulking is the more common spelling for general waterproofing and weatherization work.
