caulkers

Joint sealing tools

Caulkers are workers who seal seams and joints to make them watertight, traditionally in shipbuilding where they packed oakum or tar between hull planks.

The term extends to anyone using caulk—plumbers sealing pipes, carpenters weatherproofing windows.

Caulkers also names the metal spikes on boots that prevent slipping on wet logs or icy surfaces.
