calabaza

Latin American gourd

Calabaza is a type of winter squash common in Latin American and Caribbean cooking, with firm orange flesh similar to pumpkin or butternut squash.

The word is Spanish for squash or pumpkin generally.

In markets, calabaza is often sold in wedges because the whole fruit can be quite large: I bought a chunk of calabaza for the soup.
