nopales
Edible prickly segments
Nopales are the fleshy pads of the prickly pear cactus, used as a vegetable in Mexican cuisine.
The spines are removed and the pads sliced into strips or diced, then grilled, sautéed, or added to eggs, salads, and tacos.
They have a slightly tart, green-bean-like flavor and a somewhat mucilaginous texture.
Singular: nopal.
