posada

Mexican Christmas tradition

A posada is an inn or lodging house in Spanish-speaking countries.

In Mexico and other Latin American regions, Las Posadas refers to a nine-day Christmas celebration reenacting Mary and Joseph's search for shelter in Bethlehem.

Participants process from house to house, singing traditional songs and requesting lodging before being welcomed in for festivities: The neighborhood posada ended with piñatas and tamales.
