buttonholes
Jacket front slots
Buttonholes are the slits in fabric through which buttons pass to fasten a garment.
The word also names the small flowers worn in a jacket lapel—a British term for what Americans call a boutonniere, from the lapel slit that once held them.
To buttonhole someone is to detain them in conversation, cornering them as if grabbing their coat: He buttonholed me at the party to talk about his new business.
