buttonhole stitch

Edge-finishing loop technique

A buttonhole stitch is a looped sewing stitch used to reinforce the edges of buttonholes and prevent fraying.

The technique creates a firm, raised edge by wrapping thread around the needle before pulling through.

Beyond buttonholes, it's used decoratively in embroidery and for finishing blanket edges—where it's sometimes called a blanket stitch.
