buttonholing
Trapping in conversation
Buttonholing is cornering someone in conversation, detaining them to talk at length whether they want to listen or not.
The term comes from the old practice of grabbing someone's buttonhole to keep them from walking away: He spent the reception buttonholing executives about his startup idea.
The word suggests persistence bordering on rudeness.
