serging

Preventing fabric fraying

Serging is a method of finishing fabric edges using a serger, a specialized sewing machine that trims, encloses, and overcasts raw edges in one pass.

The technique prevents fraying and creates the stretchy, looped seams found inside most ready-made garments: She's serging the seams on that jersey knit.

Also used as a quick alternative to hemming.
