burring

Making rough edges

Burring is the present participle of burr.

It most often describes the action of producing a rough, whirring sound—like a machine or a cat's purr with an edge to it: The drill was burring in the next room.

In metalwork, burring means removing the rough edges (burrs) left after cutting or machining.

In speech, burring refers to pronouncing words with a rolled or guttural r, characteristic of certain regional accents: He spoke with a burring Scottish accent.
