sandbur

Prickly grass seed

A sandbur is a grass that produces spiny seed pods, common in sandy soils across warm regions.

The burs attach readily to clothing, fur, and bare feet, making them a nuisance on beaches and in lawns: I spent ten minutes picking sandburs out of my socks.

Also spelled sandspur.
