paschal lamb
Passover meal centerpiece
A paschal lamb is a lamb sacrificed and eaten at Passover, commemorating the Exodus story in which lamb's blood on doorposts protected Israelite households.
By extension, any innocent victim or sacrifice may be called a paschal lamb: He felt like a paschal lamb, offered up to appease the board. (Capitalized Paschal Lamb refers to Jesus Christ.)
