holocaust
Destruction by fire
A holocaust is destruction on a massive scale, especially by fire.
The word carries connotations of complete devastation and loss of life: a nuclear holocaust, environmental holocaust.
Before the mid-twentieth century, it also meant a burnt offering or sacrifice consumed entirely by flames.
The word now appears most often in reference to the Nazi genocide. (Capitalized Holocaust refers specifically to that event.)
