body surfing

Armless wave riding

Body surfing is riding ocean waves without a board, using only the body as a planing surface.

The swimmer catches a breaking wave and extends forward, letting momentum carry them toward shore.

It requires timing the wave and positioning the body to stay on the surface: We spent the afternoon body surfing at the beach.

Also spelled bodysurfing.
