wading

Splashing through shallows

Wading is walking through water or another substance that impedes movement, typically water shallow enough to keep your head above the surface: wading in the creek, wading through the flooded street.

Figuratively, to wade through something is to make slow progress through difficult or tedious material: wading through a dense legal document, wading through hundreds of emails.
