paddle out
Enter the lineup
Paddle out is the act of lying on a surfboard and using your arms to propel yourself from shore through the breaking waves to reach the lineup—the calmer water where waves form and surfers wait.
The phrase captures both the physical effort and the ritual transition from land to sea: We paddled out at dawn before the crowds arrived.
A paddle out also refers to a memorial ceremony where surfers gather in the water, often forming a circle, to honor someone who has died.
