shore break
Waves hitting sand
Shore break is a wave that breaks directly onto the beach rather than farther out at sea.
These waves form where the water is shallow near shore, creating powerful, often dangerous surf that crashes abruptly onto sand or rocks: The shore break at that beach has broken swimmers' necks.
Bodyboarders and skimboarders seek out shore break; casual swimmers avoid it.
