black oak

Dusky acorn producer

Black oak is a North American hardwood tree with dark, deeply furrowed bark and leaves with bristle-tipped lobes.

The inner bark yields a yellow dye called quercitron.

Black oak grows throughout the eastern United States, valued for lumber though considered less desirable than white oak: The hillside was covered in black oak and hickory.
