quadrireme

Four-banked Roman vessel

A quadrireme is an ancient warship powered by oars arranged so that four rowers work each vertical section—whether on four levels or doubled up on fewer banks.

These vessels were larger and more powerful than triremes, used primarily by Mediterranean naval powers including Rome and Carthage.

The Carthaginian fleet deployed quadriremes against the Roman navy.
