war galley
Ancient naval vessel
A war galley is a long, narrow warship propelled primarily by oars, used from ancient times through the early modern era in the Mediterranean and other waters.
Galleys carried banks of rowers and were built for speed and ramming or boarding enemy vessels.
The Greek trireme was the most famous war galley of antiquity.
Naval warfare shifted away from galleys as sail-powered ships with heavy cannons came to dominate.
