biopharmaceutical

Biotechnology-produced therapeutic

A biopharmaceutical is a drug derived from biological sources rather than chemical synthesis—proteins, antibodies, vaccines, or gene therapies produced using living cells or organisms.

The term distinguishes these complex molecules from traditional small-molecule drugs: Insulin was one of the first biopharmaceuticals.

Also called a biologic.
