beadles
Church law enforcers
Beadles is the plural of beadle, a minor official with ceremonial or administrative duties.
In churches, a beadle assists during services or maintains order.
In older British usage, beadles were parish officers who kept the peace and disciplined the poor—Dickens's Mr.
Bumble in *Oliver Twist* is the literary archetype.
The role survives mainly in ceremonial contexts: The beadles led the procession into the hall.
