Oliver Twist

Oliver Twist is a novel by Charles Dickens, published in 1837–38, following an orphan boy through London's criminal underworld.

The character's name has become shorthand for a pitiable, hungry child.

The phrase Please, sir, I want some more—Oliver's request for extra gruel—is widely quoted to suggest humble or audacious asking.
