bobbies
London police officers
Bobbies is the plural of bobby, British slang for a police officer.
The term comes from Sir Robert Peel, who established London's Metropolitan Police in 1829.
It remains common in British English and sounds quaint or old-fashioned to American ears: The bobbies patrolled the neighborhood on foot.
