town crier
Medieval news broadcaster
A town crier was an official who walked through streets making public announcements, ringing a bell and calling "Oyez!" to gather attention.
Before widespread literacy and mass media, town criers served as the primary means of communicating news, proclamations, and local regulations.
The role survives mainly in ceremonial contexts: The town crier announced the royal birth.
