bas relief

Shallow sculptural projection

Bas relief is sculpture in which figures project slightly from a flat background, rather than standing free.

The French term (literally "low relief") describes carved or molded work where the depth is shallow—coins and architectural friezes are typical examples.

The temple walls featured bas relief carvings of ancient battles.

Also spelled bas-relief.
