sunken relief
Carved into stone
Sunken relief is a sculptural technique where figures are carved into a flat surface so they remain below the surrounding plane rather than projecting outward.
The background stone stays at its original level while the image is cut down into it, creating shadows that define the forms.
This method was favored in ancient Egyptian art because the recessed carving protected delicate details from damage and created dramatic effects in strong sunlight.
The temple walls featured sunken relief carvings of pharaohs and gods.
