barbels
Catfish facial sensors
Barbels are whisker-like sensory organs near the mouths of certain fish, used to detect food in murky water.
Catfish and carp have prominent barbels.
The word also names a group of freshwater fish in the carp family that possess these appendages: We caught several barbels in the river.
