tench

Greenish pond dweller

A tench is a freshwater fish native to Europe and western Asia, olive-green with small scales and a thick body.

Tench favor slow-moving or still waters with muddy bottoms, where they feed near the bottom.

They're popular with anglers and sometimes stocked in ponds: He caught a fine tench from the old millpond.
