auctoritas
Respected social standing
Auctoritas is a Latin term for a particular kind of authority—not the power to command, but the weight of influence that comes from expertise, experience, or moral standing.
Roman senators had auctoritas; their advice carried force even without legal compulsion.
The word survives in discussions of political legitimacy and institutional credibility: The court's auctoritas depends on public trust in its judgments.
