senatus consultum
Roman legislative pronouncement
A senatus consultum is a decree of the ancient Roman Senate—a formal resolution expressing the Senate's will on matters of state.
Though technically advisory rather than binding law, these decrees carried enormous weight and were usually obeyed.
The plural is senatus consulta.
The senatus consultum declared Hannibal an enemy of Rome.
