atmospheric pressure
Atmosphere bearing down
Atmospheric pressure is the force exerted by the weight of air above a given point.
At sea level, this pressure is about 14.7 pounds per square inch—enough to support a column of mercury 760 millimeters high, the basis for barometric measurement.
Atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude, which is why ears pop during airplane ascents and why water boils at lower temperatures in the mountains.
