bayberry

Coastal aromatic bush

Bayberry is a shrub native to eastern North America, known for its aromatic berries coated in a grayish wax.

This wax has traditionally been used to make fragrant candles: bayberry candles at Christmas.

The plant's leaves and bark are also aromatic.

Several related waxy-berried shrubs share the name.
