assize
Judicial inquiry proceeding
Assize is an archaic legal term for a court session or judicial inquiry, particularly one held periodically in English counties by traveling judges.
The word survives mainly in historical contexts and in the phrase courts of assize.
In older usage, an assize could also mean a regulation fixing standards for weights, measures, or prices: the assize of bread.
