star chamber
Kangaroo court variant
A star chamber is a secretive tribunal that operates without transparency or accountability, often denying due process to those it judges.
The term comes from a 15th-century English court that met in a room with stars on the ceiling; it became notorious for arbitrary rulings and was abolished in 1641.
Today the phrase describes any closed-door proceeding where decisions are made without public scrutiny or appeal: The committee operated like a star chamber, expelling members without explanation.
