roadkill

Pavement's grim harvest

Roadkill is an animal killed by a vehicle on a road: We saw a deer that had become roadkill.

The word covers both the event and the carcass.

Figuratively, roadkill describes someone or something destroyed by larger forces: Small businesses became roadkill when the chain stores moved in.
