armadillos

Plated American mammals

Armadillos are mammals native to the Americas, distinguished by their armor-like shell of bony plates covering their back, head, legs, and tail.

These nocturnal burrowers range from the small pink fairy armadillo to the giant armadillo, with the nine-banded armadillo being the most common and the only species found in the United States.

When threatened, some species can roll into a ball for protection.
