aquaplaning

Tires losing grip

Aquaplaning is what happens when a layer of water builds between a vehicle's tires and the road surface, causing the tires to lose contact with the pavement.

The driver temporarily loses steering and braking control: The car started aquaplaning on the flooded highway.

Also called hydroplaning, especially in American English.
