Reading without depth
Skimming is moving quickly across a surface, barely touching it: a stone skims across water, a bird skims the treetops.
By extension, skimming means reading quickly to get the gist without absorbing details: I skimmed the article before the meeting.
Skimming also refers to removing a layer from the top of a liquid—skimming fat from broth, skimming cream from milk.
In fraud, skimming is secretly diverting money: The manager was skimming from the register.
Credit card skimming uses hidden devices to steal card data.
