alpha-fetoprotein

Prenatal screening marker

Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein produced by fetal liver cells and detectable in maternal blood during pregnancy.

Elevated levels may indicate neural tube defects or multiple pregnancies; low levels can suggest chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome.

The AFP test is a standard component of prenatal screening.

Outside pregnancy, elevated alpha-fetoprotein in adults may signal liver cancer or other conditions.
