false negative

Overlooked actual case

A false negative is a test result that wrongly indicates the absence of something actually present.

In medical screening, a false negative means a disease goes undetected: The test returned a false negative, missing her early-stage cancer.

In computing, it means failing to flag something that should have been caught.

Contrast with false positive.
