cirrhosis

Chronic liver damage

Cirrhosis is severe scarring of the liver, typically the end stage of chronic liver disease.

Healthy liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, impairing the organ's function.

The most common causes are long-term alcohol abuse and hepatitis infections: Years of heavy drinking led to cirrhosis.

The condition is irreversible, though progression can sometimes be slowed.
