magnificat
Virgin's biblical song
A magnificat is a musical setting of the Virgin Mary's hymn of praise from Luke's Gospel, beginning "My soul magnifies the Lord." Composers from the Renaissance onward have written magnificats as choral works, often elaborate and celebratory: Bach's Magnificat in D major, a magnificat for Christmas vespers.
The term sometimes extends to any song of praise or thanksgiving. (Capitalized Magnificat refers to the canticle itself.)
